"...includes 65% of the ocean's completely open water"
[edit]When we say that it "includes 65% of the ocean's completely open water," do we mean 65% by volume or by surface area? Also, what is the source of that number? Thanks. Zatrp (talk) 10:41, 7 December 2023 (UTC)
Deletion proposal withdrawn
[edit]Earlier today I proposed this article for deletion, but then withdrew the nomination after digging a brief discussion, here:
Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Oceanic_zone. I doubt now this page needs deleting, rather it needs some attention from someone with experience of the subject. JohnBlackburne (talk) 19:52, 28 November 2009 (UTC)

Differentiation Would Be of Utmost Helpfulness
[edit]Those of us without common sense have no idea why the Pelagic and Oceanic Zones are supposed to be different, when Wikipedia itself defines the Pelagic Zone as being deep, off shore waters (to my understanding). The picture doesn't really help any. 98.71.136.237 (talk) 02:38, 3 November 2012 (UTC)
Article references
[edit]I've converted the references to inline ref format based on the original 2009 edit of the page. Deleted the "(col)" from the end of the intro as could find no ref to match with it. And yes, some of these may be dead links, but it is better than nothing. Vsmith (talk) 00:26, 13 March 2018 (UTC)
The original editor: User:Elon1213 made only the one initial edit in Nov. 2009 and has not returned. Vsmith (talk) 00:26, 13 March 2018 (UTC)
Oceanic zone versus oceanic zones?
[edit]I tried to move content from ocean to here on the topic of oceanic zones. But then I realised that there is confusion here between oceanic zone (singular) and oceanic zones (plural). I recently created a redirect from "oceanic zones" to here but I am wondering now if that is justified? Compare with how oceanic zones is explained here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ocean#Oceanic_zones . I.e. zones plural seems to refer to a vertical splitting, versus oceanic zone singular seems to be more a horizontal definition (i.e. distance from land). EMsmile (talk) 00:44, 5 March 2021 (UTC)
- I think we have a duplication issue here yet again. I think this article duplicates Pelagic zone. The zoneS, as im plural, are sub-zones of that (as far as I understand the pelagic zone article, e.g. all zoneS are named a xy-pelagic zone). The pelagic zone even describes oceanic zone without differentiation, but at the same time links here. Since this problem has been raised and unanswered above since 2012, I think this article deserves a clear merger tag to move to pelagic zone, with mentioning there the alternative term. PS: there are basically no refs here. Nsae Comp (talk) 03:32, 5 March 2021 (UTC)
- Well after reading some more, there seems to be a considerable difference afterall. Best hint is that the pelagic zone can also exist in a lake? I guess I am out of my competences here.Nsae Comp (talk) 03:52, 5 March 2021 (UTC)
- The Pelagic zone first sentence says "The pelagic zone consists of the water column of the open ocean" (so only in oceans, not in lakes?). It's all a bit confusing, looking forward to collaborating with a few ocean-enthousiasts to improve the whole suite of important high-level articles about ocean and sea to educate the public (and myself!) better. :-) It will be a mammoth task. And I am surprised that we are not yet more people who are interested in these articles. I have written on several of the related WikiProjects by now. :-) EMsmile (talk) 04:14, 5 March 2021 (UTC)
- Thumbs up. Yes I am also suprised how much such a literally global thing can be so jumbled up and having had issues without attention. So yes hopefully others join! Particularly people of the trait, oceanographers who have a proper overview of the differences and nuances, plus educating references. Nsae Comp (talk) 04:23, 5 March 2021 (UTC)
